Comprehensive Care Through Surgical Orthodontics

At Cloverdale Orthodontics, we’re proud to provide advanced solutions for patients with more complex orthodontic needs—including those that go beyond teeth alignment. Surgical orthodontics (also known as orthognathic surgery) combines orthodontic treatment with corrective jaw surgery to resolve structural issues involving the jaws, bite, and facial symmetry.

What Are Translucent Cosmetic Braces?

Surgical orthodontics involves a partnership between your orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to reposition the jaws when they do not align properly. While braces are used to move the teeth, surgery is needed to correct discrepancies in jaw growth or positioning.

These procedures are typically performed after growth is complete, usually around age 17–21, depending on the individual. Surgical treatment addresses issues that can affect chewing, speech, breathing, and facial aesthetics, providing both health and cosmetic benefits.

Who Might Need Orthognathic Surgery?

Patients who have difficulty biting, chewing, or speaking—along with visibly misaligned jaws—are often candidates for surgical orthodontics. Common conditions include severe overbite or underbite, open bite, receding chin, or facial asymmetry. Orthognathic surgery may also be recommended in cases of sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, or chronic jaw pain where jaw position contributes to the problem. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your bite and jaw structure to determine whether surgery is the right path forward.

The Treatment Timeline

The surgical orthodontic process begins with pre-surgical orthodontics, where braces are used to align the teeth in preparation for surgery. This phase typically lasts 6–18 months, depending on the case. Once the teeth are in the correct position, the surgery is performed.

After surgery, you’ll return to our office for post-surgical orthodontics, where we fine-tune the bite and ensure long-term stability. The full process can take 1.5 to 3 years, but the outcome is a balanced bite, improved function, and a confident, harmonious smile.

What to Expect During Surgery and Recovery

Surgery is performed in a hospital setting by a qualified oral surgeon and typically takes a few hours. Most patients stay in the hospital for one or two nights and return home to rest for 1–2 weeks before resuming normal activities.

Swelling and soreness are common after surgery, but they gradually subside with proper care. Our team will guide you through every step of the recovery process, ensuring you’re comfortable and well-informed as your new bite begins to settle into place.
