Common Orthodontic Problems We Treat

At Cloverdale Orthodontics, we treat a wide range of dental and jaw alignment issues in children, teens, and adults. Here are 10 of the most common problems we help patients correct:

1. Crowded Teeth

When teeth don’t have enough space to align properly, they can overlap or twist. This makes cleaning more difficult and increases the risk of decay and gum disease.

2. Gapped Teeth (Spacing Issues)

Extra space between teeth can occur naturally or as a result of missing teeth. It can affect aesthetics and cause issues with speech or bite alignment.

3. Overbite

An overbite happens when the upper front teeth overlap significantly over the lower front teeth. Severe cases can lead to jaw strain, wear on the teeth, and speech issues.

4. Underbite

This occurs when the lower teeth extend beyond the upper teeth. It can affect chewing, speaking, and facial appearance, and may contribute to jaw joint discomfort.

5. Crossbite

In a crossbite, some upper teeth sit behind the lower teeth rather than in front. This can lead to tooth wear, gum recession, and uneven jaw development if not treated.

6. Open Bite

An open bite happens when the upper and lower teeth don’t touch when the mouth is closed. It’s often caused by habits like thumb-sucking and can impact chewing and speech.

7. Protruding Teeth

Also called “buck teeth,” this issue occurs when the upper front teeth stick out too far. It can make teeth more prone to injury and affect self-esteem.

8. Midline Misalignment

This is when the center of the upper and lower teeth don’t line up. While it might seem cosmetic, it can indicate bite issues or uneven jaw development.

9. Impacted Teeth

A tooth that doesn’t fully erupt—often a canine or wisdom tooth—can become stuck under the gum. We work with specialists to gently bring impacted teeth into place.

10. Jaw Pain or TMJ Issues

Orthodontic misalignment can lead to jaw pain, headaches, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort. Orthodontic treatment can often help improve function and reduce symptoms.
